Survey stakes buying guide

A survey stake is a consumable. It goes in the ground, holds a mark or a string line for a few weeks, and gets left behind or pulled and binned. The right stake is the one that drives cleanly, stays put in compacted ground, is easy to see, and costs the least per unit at the volume your crews burn through. Here is how the range breaks down.

Which stake for which job

• White survey stake 50×19×900mm — the general setout stake. Painted white for visibility, chamfered edges, pointed. Levels, string lines, offsets, kerb and pavement setout.
• Red top survey stake 50×19×900mm — the same stake with a painted red top for marks that must be seen across a site or picked up by machine operators: hazards, services, batter tops, no-go lines.
• Raw hardwood stake 50×19×900mm — unpainted, lowest cost per unit. High-turnover marking, machine control, earthworks, temporary setout. Doubles as a silt fencing stake, an agricultural stake and a garden stake.
• White survey stake 50×15×900mm — a lighter, thinner section for softer ground or when crews are carrying a lot of stakes on foot.
• GPS setout stake 25×25×900mm — square dressed, four planed faces, painted white. Machine-control and rover setout where you want a neat profile. Also sold as a tomato stake for gardens and nurseries.
• Silt fence stake 25×50×600mm — short and stiff, sized for sediment fabric on batters and boundaries.

Why hardwood

Hardwood is denser than treated pine. That matters in three places: it drives into compacted fill and road base without splitting at the head, it holds its position when the string line is tensioned or a truck brushes past, and it lasts the life of the job in wet ground without going soft. Every CACP stake is FSC certified hardwood.

Bundles, pallets and how much to order

Stakes are sold in bundles of 20, banded and ready to throw in a ute. A full pallet holds up to 1,200 × 900mm stakes — 60 bundles — which is the unit we freight interstate. Pallets can mix any products in the range, so a Sydney order might be 40 bundles of white, 15 of red top and 5 of raw on the one pallet. Order in bundles for local jobs and in pallets when you are moving stock into a depot.

Lead times and delivery

Stakes are made to order against a production run every 12 weeks. Send your list and we confirm your place in the run, the lead time and the freight the same day. Brisbane and South East Queensland: delivered to site, forklift or hand unload, usually within 24 to 48 hours of confirmation, with freight priced at checkout for your postcode. Sydney: pallet lots freighted into our depot at our cost. Anywhere else: freight quoted the same day, before you commit to anything.

Frequently asked questions

What size survey stake do I need?

For general setout and string lines, 50×19×900mm is the standard. Use 25×25×900mm where you want a neat square profile for GPS or rover setout, 50×15×900mm for softer ground or lighter carrying, and 25×50×600mm for silt fencing.

What is the difference between a survey stake and a survey peg?

A stake is long and thin (typically 900mm) and is driven to hold a line, a mark or fabric. A peg is short and stout (150 to 450mm) and is driven flush or near flush to hold a point, a level or a boundary mark. Most sites use both.

How many survey stakes are on a pallet?

Up to 1,200 × 900mm stakes, which is 60 bundles of 20. That is the standard pallet we freight into our Sydney depot.

Are the stakes painted?

White and red top stakes are painted. Raw stakes are unpainted hardwood so you can mark or flag them yourself, at the lowest cost per unit.

Do you sell to the public or only to trade?

One trade price for everyone, no accounts and no tiers. If you need a bundle of 20 for a garden or a fence line, you pay the same as a civil contractor ordering a pallet.

How long does delivery take?

Brisbane and South East Queensland are usually 24 to 48 hours from confirmation. Interstate pallet lots go into our Sydney depot on our cost. Everything else is quoted the same day, before you commit.
